Steve Agnew

Steve Agnew

Clubs played for: Barnsley, Blackburn Rovers, Portsmouth, Leicester City, Sunderland, York City, Gateshead (1983-2002)

Born: 1965

Birthplace: Shipley, West Riding of Yorkshire

Position: Midfielder

Biography: A Yorkshireman with over 400 League appearances under his belt. This prepared him well for his subsequent career as coach and trainer. Made his name at Barnsley before a £700,000 fee saw him become Blackburn Rovers' record signing. However, the move was not a great success and resulted in a brief loan spell at Pompey in 1992 before a permanent transfer to Leicester City the following year. He helped them win promotion to the premiership but was also at the heart of a mighty scrap during a match against Millwall in 1993. His heavy tackle resulted in the players having to be prised apart by officials and the local police! Agnew has since become a respected coach and held posts alongside Steve Bruce at several clubs, including Newcastle United until November 2021.
