Barnwell, John Temple (Temp) Lisle was my grandad and John Barnwell was known to us as “uncle John” who lived (or parents lived) opposite my grandma and grandad. My dad Bob, Temp’s son, who is mentioned by Brian Scott in a previous post, got to sleep with the fairs cup when NUFC won it. Every boys dream which would never happen nowadays!

Barnwell, John John Barnwell is my cousin and when we were young he and his brother Alec would visit our Grandmother, who I lived with in Edwards Road,Whitley Bay. While Alec would spend all his time reading books while visiting, John would get me to go into the back lane to play football with him, I hardly ever got a touch of the ball and not having any football skill, would have rather been playing cowboys & indians or marbles with my friends, as I was some four years younger than him. Eventually when I heard he was coming to visit our Gran I would hide the footballs he kept at her house, however John then rolled old newspapers wrapped in brown paper into a ball tied with string & then have me go out and play!!!!! The last time I met John was when our Grandmother was on her death bed at North Shields hospital and we left together and he gave me a lift home in his sports car, I think it may have been a Porsche although I,m not sure. Later on I worked in the building trade & his mother my Aunt Iris would get me to do jobs at her home and She would always cook me a steak after finishing the work and we would chat about those days and She laughed about me hiding Johns footballs. Happy Days.

BARNWELL, John John and I were childhood friends and played for the 100th boy scouts team together. We also carried the FA cup round our street as Newcastle won the cup. The son of Temple Lisle (Newcastle United Scout) was another of our friends. Mr Lisle trusted us with the cup. Would this have happened today?

BARNWELL, John As well as being a talented mid-fielder at the Forest he is a really nice man. In the early 70’s in Nottingham he owned a local launderette and on more than one occasion he took pity on this newly married man and earned me a few extra brownie points by helping me to fold up out tumble dried washing. Happy days.
