Bartram, Sam As a thirteen year old schoolboy in 1947 I would often go to the valley to watch Charlton. I was also in the Boys Brigade at a time when money was very hard to ucome by. Our skipper wrote to Charlton’s manager asking about the possibility of having any old football that they might be able to spare for our team. The answer was yes and I went to the ground with a friend and waited patiently by the tunnel. Sam Bartram, a hero to every schoolboy in the area, came out and said in a huge gravelly voice, “There you are son, look after it and good luck to you.” We went home walking on air.
