Ian Callaghan MBE

Ian Callaghan MBE

Clubs played for: Liverpool, Ft Lauderdale Strikers (loan), Swansea City, Canberra City (loan), Cork United, Sandefjord, Crewe Alexandra (1960-1982)

Born: 1942

Birthplace: Toxteth, Liverpool

Position: Midfielder

Biography: Winger. Cally was a Liverpool fan from an early age and went on to play over 600 games for the Reds. Rather surprisingly, he only won 4 England caps, in part because Sir Alf Ramsey adopted a system that did not rely on wingers. Became both an MBE and the Football Writers' Footballer of the Year in 1974. Ran the 'Hesketh' in Rufford with former team-mate Geoff Strong and set up his own Insurance business in Lydiate, Merseyside.
