Day, Mervyn As a life long Hammers fan, I have always a restful attitude for the club’s youth as they are brought into the big time, and the enthusiasm of fans for Mervin was evident

Day, Mervyn In Australia, "The Big Match" on Tuesday evenings was our weekly ration of English top line football - highlights of three games. (Australian Football had yet to really find its identity then.) On Wednesdays, guaranteed if the Hammers had featured the night previously, the competition to be GK in the regular schoolyard kickarounds, to replicate anything resembling a great save and subsequently to earn the widespread chorus of "MERVYN D-A-A-Y!" ... was the ultimate. Not a bad accolade for an Englishman to capture the imagination of a whole lot of Aussie kids.

Day, Mervyn In May 1986, Leeds played the last game of the season at Norwich. Norwich were already champions and Leeds were in the doldrums. My university mate, in his Leeds top and me, in my Celtic top stood behind the goal in the Norwich end and sang all day, the locals obviously wary of our apparent madness gave us plenty of space. In the second half Mervyn kept on looking behind at us and smiling, shaking his head. Near the end, came the news I had been praying for from Scotland that Celtic had sensationally won the league. I fell to my knees letting out a huge roar that Mervyn spun around at.

At the end of the game, Mervyn came behind the goal to applaud the two of us, as did , to be fair, all the home support!
