Gibson, Ian I first saw Ian Gibson as a very young player at Bradford and was delighted when he signed for Middlesbough. He was enormously talented and Revie was quoted that he had thoughts of him being at the hub of his Leeds Team (Bremner and Giles were to be the eventual midfield). In a 3-2 victory for Boro over Leeds at Elland Road, Gibson was outstanding.
A brilliant talent.
Gibson, Ian I remember the first time Coventry played West Ham at Highfield Rd in the first division, season 67/68. Gibson ran the ball towards the Hammers defence, dribbled past Bobby Moore, turned around and took the ball passed him again. Showboating or what!
Gibson, Ian I first went to see Middlesbrough in the 1957/58 season and followed them for the next ten years or so till I moved away from the town. Brian Clough was a brilliant opportunistic goalscorer as his phenomenal record testifies but Ian Gibson was, without doubt,the finest player Boro had during those years and probably in the history of the club.His ball control, passing,and general awareness were unsurpassed by any other player I have seen. He was massively underrated, possibly if I remember correctly,because he was a bit wayward (I think had a bit of a gambling problem). Bur he was a wonderful footballer in a mediocre Boro side and when I think back to those days it's Ian Gibson I remember, even more than Brian Clough. A true, unappreciated genius if ever there was one.
