Peter Harris

Peter Harris

Clubs played for: Portsmouth (1946-1959).

Born: 1925

Birthplace: Portsmouth

Position: Outside-right

Biography: Having watched Pompey as a child, it was right and fitting that he became one of the club's finest servants. An old fashioned winger who could fly past defenders, he also had a good eye for goal and bagged over 200 in his career. He played his part in both Championship years and he would have earned more than his brace of England caps if he had not been playing at the same time as Stanley Matthews and Tom Finney. A fantastic career was brought to an end in 1960 when he contracted TB and was forced to retire. Harris later lived in Hayling Island where he managed a restaurant complex, worked for a boat builders and then at a local day centre. Died on 2nd January 2003, aged 77.

HARRIS, Peter I think Peter Harris was my dad's uncle...his name was Brian...I would love to know more about my dad's family but don't know where to start

HARRIS, Peter I remember on many occasions when the ball went out to Peter on the right, he would take off like a rocket and some wag in the South Stand would play the Post Horn Gallop on a bugle.

Harris, Peter Peter was my schoolboy hero and I always played Outside-right myself as a result of that. He always took penalties for Pompey, but had his own special way of taking them. He would hit the ball so that it struck the underside of the cross-bar and bounce over the keeper's head into the goal. I seem to recall that the goal-posts were square-sectioned back in the 1950s. I don't remember Peter ever missing a penalty!

Harris, Peter I think he was a relation of mine does anyone know of his family?
