Ian Hutchinson

Ian Hutchinson

Clubs played for: Burton Albion, Cambridge United, Chelsea (1966-1976)

Born: 1948

Birthplace: Derby

Position: Striker

Biography: Remembered for his famous long throw-ins, he was signed from Cambridge United after Frank Blunstone was asked to go and watch a goalkeeper. Hutch caught his eye and Dave Sexton and coach Ron Suart were soon dispatched to watch him. He then had to interrupt his honeymoon to sign the deal after a £5,000 bid was accepted. He provided the ideal foil for Peter Osgood, powerful in the air, he headed the second equaliser in the 1970 FA Cup Final against Leeds. Then in the replay, his missile-like tthrow was headed in by Dave Webb for the winner. His career never hit the heights it threatened because of injuries. During his time at the club he suffered two broken legs, a badly broken ankle, a dislocated knee, problem toe as well as almost persistent knee injuries. He kept on making returns until July 1976 when he retired aged 27 and worked in Chelsea's commercial department. A qualified Cordon Bleu chef, he helped out with the catering at Brentford FC and ran a pub in Windsor with his old team-mate Peter Osgood. Later worked in corporate hospitality for several clubs and as a curator at a London art gallery before his death in September 2002 after a long illness.

Hutchinson, Ian ian was my best friend and a very generous guy but unknown to most he could have put George Best to shame with the amount of women that loved him.

Hutchinson, Ian I remember staying in his flat as a kid and getting beans on toast :)

Hutchinson, Ian Ian Hutchinson was (and is) my favourite player ever. I used to go and see him and Peter Osgood every week in their pub. He was always happy to talk to me about his time at Chelsea and once let me hold his 1970 FA Cup winners medal, but unfortunately he wouldn't let me keep it!!
