Brian Lewis

Brian Lewis

Clubs played for: Crystal Palace, Portsmouth, Coventry City, Luton Town, Oxford United, Colchester United, Portsmouth. (1960-1974)

Born: 1943

Birthplace: Woking

Position: Midfielder

Biography: A versatile player who enjoyed two separate spells at Fratton Park. The first, between 1963 and 1966 saw him become a regular first team member following his £8,000 transfer from Crystal Palace. He reluctantly moved to Coventry City in England's World Cup year when Pompey accepted an offer of £15,000 plus Ray Pointer from the Sky Blues. Was a member of the giant killing Fourth Division Colchester team that stunned First Division Leeds United (with goals scored by Portsmouth born Dave Simmonds and Ray Crawford). Worked as a salesman in a furniture showroom in Bournemouth until his death from cancer in 1988 aged 55. It was claimed that he was the player immortalised on the sign that hung above the Pompey Arms for many years. Although this has always been the subject of fierce debate, with others believing that it was in fact Albert McCann.

Lewis, Brian One of Pompey’s greatest ever players in my opinion.

Lewis, Brian I remember Brian when as a schoolboy I followed Palace (before spending my Saturdays playing the oval ball game for Old Beccehamians ). As a very young player he seemed to have a very rosy future (and a ruthless tackle). Very sad he didn't make old bones.
