Peter Marinello

Peter Marinello

Clubs played for: Arsenal, Portsmouth, Fulham. (1966-1982).

Born: 1950

Birthplace: Edinburgh, Scotland

Position: Forward

Biography: Was hailed as the next George Best when he made a big money move from Motherwell to Arsenal. He certainly had the ability to become a top star on the field but the attraction of the 'high life' took its toll. He struggled to command a regular first team slot and turned down the offer of a new contract, preferring instead to accept more money by signing for Pompey. This caused a few raised eyebrows but Chairman John Deacon was clearly delighted to add a big name to his ambitious plans. Sadly, the Scottish winger had a fairly unspectacular stay. This was ultimately brought to an end when, in an attempt to re- coup some of his cash, the Chairman agreed to sell him to Motherwell for £35,000. Later ran a pub called Marinello's in Edinburgh but poor decisions and mixing with the wrong type of people saw him ultimately being made bankrupt. He released an autobiography called 'Fallen Idle' which describes his rise and fall with great honesty. He now lives in Bournemouth where he gave up work to become full time carer for his wife.

Marinello, Peter My dad played with you, Stephen williams. He’s a Welshman and played with Liam Brady, Charlie Newton. He speaks very highly of you but is struggling these days. I’m his son and just hoped you could help just by getting in touch

Marinello, Peter Peter trained my son at Bournemouth sports many years ago. We celebrated a great season. Never thought of himself as someone special. Just loved football. Cheers Peter

Marinello, Peter Hi Peter, I am not sure if you memory goes back St Joseph’s primary school when we lined for our first football match. We were given the strips Purple Hoops on White, I have no idea who picked them. At that game it it not take long to have come to watch you play. As they say the rest is history. If it was possible it would be great to make again after all these years.

All the best
Danny

Marinello, Peter I just spent a very pleasant 20 minutes sat next to Peter in hospital outpatients following surgery. We chatted over ailments. It was only when his name was called I realised who I was chatting to. As I lifetime Arsenal fan I was thrilled. He was very funny and very charming.

Marinello, Peter Wonderful entertaining player who played for an exciting Hibs team in the early 1970s (not Motherwell as in text above). I remember him running rings around my team Hearts!

Marinello, Peter Just found out about your book where you mention my granda DAN MORRIS. What a wonderful surprise. Family still live at the same address. We didn’t realise how important a scout my granda was. He would just tell us he was a football scout for Chelsea. Thank you for including him in your book. I’ve just bought 5 copies for 3 of his last remaining children, Margaret, Anne & John. Hope you are well. Take care.

Marinello, Peter I was at Norton Park school and all the Hibs players would sit on the wall which was part of our playground. I fell in love with Peter Marinello. I was only 13 but that was the best part of my school days! I was a Hibs fan like my father.Great memories.

Marinello, Peter I had the delight of playing against him when he was 48 years of age. A.friendly match between Arsenal Old Boys (and celebrity fans) and a village team, Offwell and Widworthy AFC. It was Offwells 50th anniversary and Arsenal came down with Stevie Williams, Tony Hadley...and Mr Marinello.. At 48 he spent the game alternating between left and right wing to entertain the touchline crowd and destroying the Offwell defence. Superb entertainer, wonderful footballer (at 48!!) and a gentleman with the people who turned out on the day, many of whom remembered his heyday. Good day, good Bloke.

Marinello, Peter The new George Best it was a shame ,it didn’t work for him big money and huge wages .
He didn’t last at Arsenal at United we thought he couldn’t lace George’s boots
A massive bluff by Arsenal big money small hitter
