An established striker who had earned his reputation at Plymouth, Ipswich and Arsenal was brought in from the Gunners for £150,000 and acted as the perfect foil for Mick Quinn. This was to prove to be his league swansong and he ended up playing in America and Malta. Mariner set up his own management company for footballers and briefly taught at a Bolton school before starting a successful coaching career in the America.
