Biography: One of the most stylish and creative players of his day. Rejected by Celtic as a youngster for being too small, he arrived at Stamford Bridge for £95,000 from Clyde in July 1983 as part of John Neal's rebuilding plans and was an immediate success. He scored 14 goals in his first season, picking up a Second Division Championship winner's medal, as well as being named the club's Player of the Year. In the First Division, he was the main provider of ammunition for Kerry Dixon and David Speedie. Won a Full Members Cup winners medal in 1986 and was named Player of the Year for the second time a year later. He left the club after they were relegated following the play-off defeat to Middlesbrough. A tribunal set a £925,000 fee for his switch to Everton. Has an arts degree, was Motherwell's chief executive, now lives in the Borders and enjoys a successful career as television pundit and newspaper columnist.
