Biography: Ron Newman was born in Fareham and served Pompey well as a bustling forward in the late 1950's but it was in the United States where he became a massive star. Having accepted an offer to coach Dallas Tornado in 1969, he went on to establish himself as arguably the most successful coach in the history of American soccer. Over the next 30 years his teams won all of the major titles including the ASL, NASL, and the indoor league championship 10 times with San Diego. He has been inducted into the National Soccer Hall of Fame, Dallas Walk of Fame, Atlanta Soccer Hall of Fame and was granted the 'Key of the City' in San Diego and Fort Lauderdale. Despite the fame and glory he still manages to come back to catch up with his old playing buddies at Fratton Park.

Newman, Ron During the close season, Ron used to be a door to door salesman. I remember him knocking on our door in Portchester. He used to love chatting about football but didn't sell many of his wares. Great bloke though.


NEWMAN, Ron Former Pompey player Ron Newman passed away on 27th August 2018. He had moved to the United States in the 1970's and become one of the biggest names in American soccer, resulting in his induction to their Hall of Fame in 1992.
