Peter Schmeichel

Peter Schmeichel

Clubs played for: Gladsaxe-Hero, Brondby, Manchester United, Sporting Lisbon, Aston Villa, Manchester City (1981-2003)

Born: 1963

Birthplace: Gladsaxe, Denmark

Position: Goalkeeper

Biography: The 'Great Dane' has proved to be an inspirational last line of defence ever since his signing from Danish club Brondby in 1991, for what has proved to be a giveaway fee by today's standards of only £500,000. While his colleagues may grab the glory of match winning goals, it has often only been possible because 6ft 4in Peter has done such a magnificent job at the other end. By the time he left Old Trafford, he had won five Premier League titles, three FA Cups, four Charity Shields, a League Cup, Super Cup and a Champions League. He ended his United career with the treble before joining Sporting Lisbon. Since retirement, Schmeichel has worked as television football pundit for the BBC in England and TV3+ in Denmark. He owned his childhood side Hvidovre IF for several years before withdrawing himself. He has also taken part in charity football matches such as Soccer Aid, and has appeared in reality television shows such as "Strictly Come Dancing". In his native Denmark, he has also become a TV show presenter of quiz show "1 mod 100" and the european version of the Discovery Channel show "Dirty Jobs".
