Biography: Many pundits thought that Sheringham's career was drawing to a close when he signed for Pompey in 2003. It soon became apparent that he had the same fitness and stamina of players considerably younger than himself and he went on to play competitively until the age of 42. His contract at Fratton Park was only for one season but he played in most games and scored a creditable 10 goals. Upon release, he was not prepared to accept that he was finished and managed to play for West Ham for a further three years, winning the Championship Player of the Year award by scoring 20 of the goals that earned the Hammers a return to the Premiership. In 2006 at the age of 41, he broke his own record for being the Premiership's oldest scorer with a goal against... Pompey! (We won 2-1 though.) Retirement finally came at the end of the 2007/8 season having tried in vain to help Colchester United avoid relegation. His son Charlie is now following in dad's footsteps. He started as a junior at Millwall and Tottenham but is currently playing for Dartford Town..
