Biography: Spotted by Ray Crawford while still at the Technical High School, Viney, who had always been a Pompey fan, realised his dream made his first team debut in 1976. He had joined the club at a time when Ian St John was forced to rely on a clutch of youngsters and was given his chance alongside Steve Foster and Chris Kamara. The next six years were full of ups and downs: he had to endure relegation to the fourth division, was called upon to play in goal during two matches, and was Player of the Year in 1980/1. After almost 200 games in all competitions, he joined Exeter City, where became a fans' favourite and was voted their Player of The Year twice. Upon retirement, he helped Torrington, firstly as manager, then as Director of Football. Still living in Devon and working in the financial services industry training new financial advisers. Alan Knight is married to his sister!
