Dennis Viollet

Clubs played for: Manchester United, Stoke City, (1952-1966).

Born: 1933

Birthplace: Fallowfield, Manchester

Biography: A traditional centre forward whose two England caps are scant reward for his consistent goal scoring. In 1959-1960 alone he managed to find the net on 32 occasions in only 36 matches. He forged a profitable strike with Tommy Taylor until the Munich disaster took his partner's life. He was laid low for a long time after the crash but returned to action in time to play in the FA Cup Final against Bolton Wanderers. It came as a surprise when Sir Matt Busby sold him to Stoke City in 1962 for £25,000. In 1967, he moved to the United States as one of the pioneers of the sport in America. Was directing the Dennis Viollet Dolphin Soccer Camps in addition to his duties as head coach at Jacksonville University until his death in March 1999, after a battle with cancer. Daughter Rachel was the number one British women's tennis player.
