Frank Mitchell

Frank Mitchell

Clubs played for: Coventry City, Birmingham City, Chelsea, Watford (1941-1958)

Born: 1922

Birthplace: Goulburn, New South Wales, Australia

Position: Wing-half

Biography: Strangely, this 'Mitchell' was born in Australia but moved to England as a teenager (see David, above). He developed into a classy wing half, but saw his career destroyed like so many good players by the Second World War. Spent three seasons in the Blues' first team after signing from Birmingham City, looked set for a long stay at the club until he lost his place to Bill Dickson and was sold for £7,000 to Watford. Played county cricket with Warwickshire, was groundsman and secretary for Knowle and Dorridge cricket club and by day his job was coaching and keeping the grounds at Kynoch's which he did for many years. Died in Myton Hamlet in April 1984 aged 61.

Mitchell, Frank I saw Frank Mitchell play for Birmingham City as a youngster aged nine years. He was in the team which had Freddie Harris, Cyril Trigg, Gill Merrick, Don Dorman,, Ken Green, Jackie Stewart, Fred Duckhouse and others. Frank was a class wing half, stylish, never ruffled. He went to Chelsea but the last time I saw him play he was in his 40s and played in the memorial game to Jeff Hall who died of polio. The match was at Perry Hall playing fields and Frank still had style and talent. A quality footballer also played cricket for Warwickshire.
