Birthplace: Hendon, Sunderland

Position: Goalkeeper

Biography: Legendary Sunderland goalkeeper where he made 627 appearances in 17 years for his hometown club, including an outstanding performance in the 1973 FA Cup final against Leeds. He joined Southampton on la short term loan in 1976. After retiring he acted as Goalkeeping coach for both Birmingham City and Sunderland. Now in his late 60s he has only recently retired from coaching

Montgomery, Jim My Dad taught Jimmy Montgomery as a young teacher at St Hilda's School in Southwick. When we were kids we thought he taught him how to play football - but sadly not.

Montgomery, Jim 'Monty' was always applauded onto the pitch and after the match as he left at the old 'Dell' Southampton,in such high esteem was he held by Saints fans,when he visited as Sunderland goalkeeper. As a young keeper he would frequently make incredible saves, I felt he was very unlucky not to be England keeper. Never really got a chance as Gordon Banks held the jersey at the time.
