Biography: Joined United in 1950 from the same Ryder Brow Boys Club that had supplied Roger Byrne only two years earlier. He signed a professional contract in 1952 but had to wait three years until the 1955-1956 Championship winning season to make his league debut. It turned out that the defeat at the hands of Everton in September 1955 was his only first team appearance. After being unable to dislodge Jeff Whitefoot and Eddie Colman in his six years at Old Trafford, he was sold to Chesterfield. Went into teaching and spent 27 years at Saint Aidan's Church of England Technology College until retiring. Now lives in retirement in Hambleton, Poulton le Flyde.

Whitehurst, Walter I played in same team as Walter at Ashton Utd. I would be 16 at the time having just left Man utd A&B teams. What a player, really neat and tidy on the ball so intelligent in his play, on and off the field also.
Some dressing room banter could be a bit rough. Walter would never be involved such a gentleman.

That team at Ashton also included John Mahoney Stoke, Alf Arrowsmith Liverpool, Colin Whittaker Oldham Colin Davis Port Vale and many others. You can imagine how great to listen to Walter and these men talk football.

Whitehurst, Walter Walter was my cousin. He took me to the Cliff when I was 8 years old when he played in the United A team in the mid 1950 s. Players such as, Dave Gaskell, Johnny Giles, Kenny Morgan and Pat Carilion used to kick a ball to me in the dressing room. WALTER died in 2012 aged 77 he was 13 years older than me. He gave me many great memories as did my school friend Johnny Aston whose father Johnny Aston Snr gave us some useful training.

Whitehurst, Walter Walter taught ‘Metal work’ and was the head of the craft and design dept at St Aidan’s CE high school in the village of Preesall, nr Blackpool. Interestingly, his footballing background not widely known by the pupils of the school. During my time at the school in the 80’s he was not heavily involved in coaching the football teams.
