Biography: All round sportsman and former army commando, was POW in North Africa after being captured in a World War Two raid. United paid £11,000 and broke the transfer record for a keeper to procure his services from Queens Park Rangers in 1950. Helped win the League Championship in 1951-1952 before retiring in 1953. He settled in Ealing and did various jobs. He died in April 1976, a month before his 56th birthday, after suffering from ill health.
