Biography: In 2003, Atherton was appointed caretaker manager of Bradford City, but was not given the full time job. Since retirement, Atherton has worked as a youth team coach for Wigan Athletic and as assistant manager of Halifax Town. He left Halifax when the club folded. He has also featured for Sheffield Wednesday and Wigan Athletic masters team.
