Alan Barnett

Alan Barnett

Clubs played for: Portsmouth, Grimsby Town, Exeter City, Torquay United (1955-1966)

Born: 1934

Birthplace: Croydon

Position: Goalkeeper

Biography: Goalkeeper and former Army Corporal who joined Pompey from Croydon Amateurs having been spotted by Jack Mansell, who was working as a football coach at a holiday camp at the time. He played 25 games between the sticks for Pompey before moving to Grimsby in 1958. This move had repercussions for the club – it meant they had to find a new secretary as the post had been occupied by Alan's wife during their stay on the south coast. He was subsequently a member of Exeter City’s first ever promotion winning side but did eventually return to Portsmouth to work for in his father-in-law’s garden centre. Died at the age of 43 in 1978.
