Biography: Was recommended to Chelsea by his former Sheffield Wednesday boss Bob Brown who was working as a scout, and cost 4,000. Served the club well in the years leading up to the World War Two. Joined the police force during the war, before becoming a clerk of works for the MoD. Burgess moved back to Cheshire to run a pub but was working as a foreman joiner at the time of his death aged 53 in 1957.
