Birthplace: Newcastle upon Tyne

Position: Centre-forward

Biography: Centre Forward then inside forward. First to wear No. 9 shirt at Newcastle U. Captained Grimsby T after 2nd WW. Captained Gateshead during wartime league, they won Tyne Wear Tees cup beating Newcastle in semi and then beating Sunderland 5-1 in the final at Roker Park 1945 . Clever player and wonderful header of the ball. Tommy Briggs would never have flourished as he did without the service he got from Billy. Sadly no date or details of his death. A lovely man.

Billy When Billy left Grimsby he became a publican at the Freeman Arms, Freeman Street, Grimsby. Known locally as Cairnsies. Lovely chap. Excellent header of the ball. RIP
