Alex Cropley

Clubs played for: Hibernian, Arsenal, Aston Villa, Newcastle United (loan), Toronto Blizzard, Portsmouth (1968-1982)

Born: 1951

Birthplace: Aldershot

Position: Midfielder

Biography: Despite making his name in with Hibernian and becoming a Scottish international, Alex Cropley was actually born in Aldershot. He was tempted back south by Arsenal in a £150,000 transfer from Hibernian in 1974. After a spell with Aston Villa, he joined Pompey in October 1981 but injuries restricted him to only 10 games and forced his retirement the following year at the age of 31. This prompted a return to Edinburgh, where he became a taxi driver. In December 2020, it was reported that Cropley had been diagnosed with dementia.
