Jack Froggatt

Born: 1922

Birthplace: Sheffield

Position: Outside-left

Biography: It was natural that Froggatt became a footballer as both his cousin and uncle had player professionally. He first came to Pompey's attention while still in the RAF and working in his father's butchers shop in Commercial Road. Was given his first team debut in 1945. Originally signed as a Centre-half, he asked the manager for the chance to show what he could do on the wing and seized the opportunity with both hands. This led to over 300 appearances, plenty of goals and international recognition. By the time he reluctantly left the club in 1953 to join Leicester City he had won 13 England caps. He returned to the city almost ten years later when his playing career had come to an end and spent the next 22 years as a landlord of the Manor House in Cosham, the Milton Arms around the corner from Fratton Park and latterly the Green Man in Partridge Green, West Sussex. He died at the age of 70 on 17th February 1993.
