David Gaskell

David Gaskell

Clubs played for: Manchester United, Wigan Athletic (loan), Wrexham, Arcadia Shepherds (1955-1973)

Born: 1940

Birthplace: Orrell, Lancashire

Position: Goalkeeper

Biography: When he made his United debut in the 1956 Charity Shield aged only 16 years and 19 days, he was and still is the youngest player to play for United. But he still had to wait 12 months for his league debut against Spurs. He played regularly as cover for Harry Gregg and was in goal for the 1963 FA Cup Final victory over Leicester. The arrival of Pat Dunne relegated him to third choice. When they both left, Alex Stepney and Jimmy Rimmer joined, so he decided to move on. After retiring, he coached in South Africa before taking a job in Kuwait. He returned to the UK to live in Wrexham where he worked as a salesman for a concrete making firm, then became regional manager of a flooring company. He is now retired.

Gaskell, David He lived top of my street and his dad had the shop there. I was only around 14 and he gave me a lift up to Billinge. I was made up haha

Gaskell, David David used to go snig (freshwater eel) fishing with my Uncle Sam who was a coal miner in Wigan. I have a tape recording of my Uncle Sam telling an amusing story in a very strong Wigan dialect if David would like to hear it. If possible could this message be passed to him with my best wishes.

Thanks
