Kevin Hales

Kevin Hales

Clubs played for: Chelsea, Leyton Orient (1979-1993)

Born: 1961

Birthplace: Dartford

Position: Midfielder

Biography: Made his debut in 1979 but then had to wait over a year until being recalled to the side by John Neal for the longest run of his Blues career. A string of niggling injuries meant he could never establish himself. Since hanging up his boots he has worked for a number of non-league clubs, most recently Rushden and Diamonds, where he was assistant manager until June 2008. Having managed a cleaning firm, he is now living on Merseyside, coaching and scouting for Everton.

Hales, Kevin Gravesend & Dartford District CC.
We were in the U19 AKCC final at St. Lawrence Cricket Ground in 1979. As twelfth man (broke finger in previous round) I watched the trophies being presented from the Kent changing room balcony. We had won. With only the 12th men trophies left on the table (I didn’t think I was due one) the signatories were wrapping up when Kevin said “Hold on Duncan hasn’t received his” I had to walk down the hallowed stairs of Kent CCC and out onto the ground to applause from everyone and I hadn’t even played.
Quite embarrassing, he might not remember it but I certainly did and still have the trophy.
I know him and Trevor Timms , both played as footballers, Trevor for Dartford. They’d both played cricket for J. & E. Halls.
He’ll definitely remember our old manager, John Downer. Looked like J. Edgar Hoover and a demeanour to match.
