Tony Hawksworth

Clubs played for: Manchester United, Bedford Town, Rushden Town (1953-1966)

Born: 1938

Birthplace: Sheffield

Position: Goalkeeper

Biography: The Sheffield born goalkeeper is one of a small handful of players to have won three successive FA Youth Cup winner's medals in 1954, 1955 and 1956. He had only played three reserve games for United when he was called into the first team for a game against Blackpool in October 1956 after an injury to Ray Wood. Hawksworth was doing his national service at the time and needed special permission to leave the army barracks in Catterick, North Yorkshire, to play in the game. It turned out to be his only first team appearance. He was posted to Germany at the time of the Munich air crash and visited his former youth team mate, Duncan Edwards, on the night he died. In December 1958, he was allowed to leave United and signed for non-league Bedford Town. After playing non-league football, he worked for a sweet company before joining British Gas until his retirement in 1995. He now lives in Dronfield Woodhouse in Derbyshire.

Hawksworth, Tony My grandfather Herbert Abel who lived a few doors away from Tony and his mum and dad followed his football career avidly. I remember going to watch him play at Bedford with my mum dad and grandfather. My grandfather also attended his wedding to Barbara.
