Biography: Billy Hughes, a key player in the 1973 FA Cup win, has died at the age of 70 after a long illness (December 20th 2019). A Scottish international and brother of John, was clubhouse manager and steward of the Stressholme Golf Club in Darlington and later became Steward of the Newark Conservative Club. Sunderland legend He scored four times in the FA Cup run which culminated in victory over Leeds at Wembley, including the winner in the semi-final against Arsenal. Hughes won one Scotland cap and also played for Derby County and Leicester. He also had brief spells in Canada and America and a loan with the Carlisle United.

Hughes, Billy I remember Billy running the Rising Sun pub in Derby after he finished playing, there were loads of old football shirts pinned up on the walls, as well as pictures of him with Rod Stewart and other famous people. He was a nice bloke and should never have been allowed to leave Derby (Docherty).

Hughes, Billy I remember meeting him in 1973 at the Tyne View Catholic Club, with Tony Towers with the FA Cup. I was so excited as I was only 14 years old. But I thought he was gorgeous lol. R.I.P. Billy 😥

Hughes, Billy Billy was a great player back in the 70's on the field and off the field. I can always remember in ans a few of the players in the cafe on the corner of Sanderingham Rd and Fulwell Rd playing the old Pin Ball Machines. His style and looks remindered me of Besty another great player


HUGHES, Billy Like you, I remember the lads use go into the café on the corner of Sandringham Road, after training as I use to live in Duke Street North.
