Biography: The 'Flying Scotsman' was a major box office attraction when he became the first of a string of big name signings who were supposed to lead the charge for honours. He arrived for £8,500 from Huddersfield Town and his debut against Sheffield Wednesday attracted a crowd of 51,000. A difference of opinion with the club's management saw him walk out on the club two years later. After playing non-league soccer both here and in France, he quit playing at the age of 28. Having joined the army and rising to the rank of major, he was killed in a car crash while serving in Cairo in November 1946.
