Biography: Although he was born in Edinburgh, Luigi Macari's family hail from the same region of Italy as Sophia Loren. Joined United for £200,000 in 1973, a record fee for a Scottish player at the time, shortly after Tommy Docherty took over at Old Trafford. Initially used in the front line, it was only when Tommy Docherty switched him to midfield that he made his most telling contribution. He suffered relegation and then promotion in his first two seasons, he played in three FA Cup Finals and a League Cup Final during his 11 years service before accepting the role of player manager at Swindon in 1984. Scottish international striker, has managed Swindon Town, West Ham, Stoke City (twice), Birmingham, Celtic, Huddersfield. Lives in Stoke-on-Trent, works as a pundit on MUTV and for a local paper. Also owns the Lou Macari Chip Shop near Old Trafford.
