Malcolm Manley

Malcolm Manley

Clubs played for: Johnstone Burgh, Leicester, Portsmouth (1964-1974)

Born: 1949

Birthplace: Johnstone, Scotland

Position: Centre-back

Biography: Became one of the new players drafted in thanks to John Deacon's ambition and cash injection. The plan was to create a defensive partnership between the former Leicester man and Paul Went, and this seemed to be working until Manley suffered a severed cartilage in only his 11th League game. This ended his career and he now lives back in the midlands, in Nuneaton.

Manley, Malcolm My name is Nigel Kelsall and I knew (Malky) when I was an apprentice professional at Leicester City. As soon as I met him I was in awe of him. I shared digs with him, Murray Brodie, Joe Waters and David Tearse. I watched him in training, which he wasn't to keen on, but put a ball to him and I swear he could make the ball talk with his left foot. He reminded me of Jim Baxter the great Scottish International. Injury cut short a fantastic talent. He used to take myself and Joe to a local Chinese restaurant, and he would always pay for us. He really was a great bloke and I am sure he will be sadly missed by everyone who were fortunate enough to have known him. R I P Malky.

Manley, Malcolm I played for Stanley Green Secondary School against Malcolm who played for John Neilston school. Malcolm was a very cool and classy player, and he scored the only goal, a header from a corner kick. I was unaware of his terrible injury. Malcolm could have been one of the many Scots to have graced the pitch with his wonderful talent. My best friend Bert Mcgiffen played with Malcolm, Bert also was a very good player and sadly he passed away in his early 60's.
