Clubs played for: Manchester United, Aston Villa, Derby County, Sheffield United (loan), Sheffield United (1981-1998)
Born: 1959
Birthplace: Ealing
Position: Centre-back
Biography: Spotted by Ron Atkinson and quickly snapped up for only £30,000 from Dublin side, St Patrick's. Had it not been for injuries and personal problems, Paul would have added to his haul of Republic of Ireland caps and United appearances. However, his undoubted ability enabled him to play on long after most of his peers had retired, but he only had a FA Cup Final victory against Everton, when he was voted Man Of The Match, to show for his years at Old Trafford. Often regarded as one of the best defenders in the game, he clashed with Sir Alex Ferguson because of his alcohol addiction. He rejected a retirement package of £100,000 plus a testimonial to retire. Instead he went to Aston Villa to continue his career. McGrath now lives in Monageer, County Wexford, in his native Republic of Ireland. His autobiography that dealt with his alcoholism as a player, named "Back from the Brink", was the most successful Irish sports book ever.
