George Mills

George Mills

Clubs played for: Chelsea, Bromley (1929-1943)

Born: 1908

Birthplace: Deptford

Position: Striker

Biography: A bargain £10 signing from non-league Bromley, Mills became the first player in the clubs history to score 100 league goals. Often overlooked in favour of more glamourous players like Hughie Gallagher, Joe Payne and Joe Bambrick, he was never out gunned by them. Earned a nickname of 'The Bomb' and scored 14 goals in his first season to help the club win promotion to the First Division. A tall well-built striker, he gave fantastic service and even managed to score a hat trick on his international debut for England. Continued to find his chances limited despite his scoring record for Chelsea. Returned to Stamford Bridge after the Second World War as a coach, later worked for a printing company in the City of London. Died suddenly on holiday in Torquay in July 1970 aged 61.
