Biography: When Chelsea found themselves back in Division Two they needed a goalkeeper to provide back up to Jack Whitley. Accordingly, they paid Stockport £550 for the 23 year-old stopper, who soon became established as first choice between the posts. He saw off competition from Whitley and Ron Brebner in his second season to win an FA Cup winner's up medal He soon developed into one of the best keepers in the country and became a firm favourite with the fans. Went on to help the club win the London Victory Cup against Fulham in 1919. By the time he left the club he had kept a total of 77 clean sheets in 239 first team appearances. Suffered shrapnel wounds whilst serving at Ypres in the First World War but within two months was back in action. Later worked for the Stockport Electricity Department for 20 years. Died in January 1950 aged 65.
