Tony Nicholas

Clubs played for: Chelsea, Brighton & Hove Albion, Chelmsford City, Leyton Orient, Dartford, Cambridge United, Dartford, Gravesend & Northfleet, Folkestone, Great Baddow (1956-1977)

Born: 1938

Birthplace: West Ham

Position: Inside-forward

Biography: Having served his time on the Chelsea ground staff, this quick and agile inside forward had the misfortune to be around the club at the same time as Jimmy Greaves. He never lived up to his early promise after making his league debut as an 18 year-old when Ted Drake was looking to make wholesale changes to his aging squad that had won the Championship in 1955. Enjoyed his most productive spell in the autumn of 1957 when he scored six goals in nine games. The signing of Johnny Brooks spelled the end of his stay with the club and Brighton paid a club record £15,000 to take him to South Coast. He ran a successful DIY business after retiring from football. Died in September 2005.

Nicholas, Tony I went to school with Tony at Shipman Road West Ham and played in the same school team I used to go to Chelsea with him to watch training and knew his family well. I am sad to hear of his passing. Good wishes to his family
