Norman Piper

Clubs played for: Plymouth Argyle, Portsmouth, Lusitano, Fort Lauderdale Strikers, Yeovil Town, Columbus Magic, Wichita Wings, Pittsburgh Spirit (1964-1983)

Born: 1948

Birthplace: North Tawton

Position: Midfielder

Biography: An England Under 23 international whose £40,000 transfer from Plymouth Argyle equalled the club's existing record, which had been set by his former Plymouth team-mate Mike Trebilcock's move from Everton. Despite constant fear that he would be snapped up by a First division club, he played over 350 games over the next eight years and added more Under 23 caps to his trophy cabinet. Time was called in 1978 when Ian St John shuffled the team and Norman was replaced by the only other Piper to play for the club - his namesake Steve had been brought in from Brighton. At this point he accepted a contract to play for Fort Lauderdale and is still in America today. He now is a coach for Carlsbad Lightning in Southern California. England Under 23 international

Piper, Norman Remember being so proud to see a Pompey player wearing an England shirt when Norman represented the Under-23s. Great full-back and a real hero of mine.
