Bryan Robson

Born: 1957

Birthplace: Chester-le-Street, County Durham

Position: Midfielder

Biography: A true captain, Bryan managed to combine tenacious skill with the ability to motivate others around him. His determination was never more evident than when he had to overcome three broken legs in 1976- 1967. To his credit, not only did he recover but he also managed to recapture the form that won him the captaincy of both club and country. Originally from County Durham, 'Robbo' followed his former manager, Ron Atkinson, up the M6 from West Bromwich Albion in 1981, in a deal that also saw the arrival of Remi Moses. The £1.5 million paid was a record at the time and thought to be excessive by some critics. However, by the time Bryan finally left the fold in 1994 to run Middlesbrough, there was no doubt that he had fully justified the investment. Won three FA Cup medals, one League Title and a Cup Winners Cup medal in 1990-1991. Appointed player manager of Middlesbrough in May 1994 and spent seven years in the hot seat, has since managed Bradford, WBA, Sheffield United and since September 2009, the Thailand national team, a role he combines with being a global ambassador for United. Also enjoyed a successful business career with a stake in the Birthday chain of card shops.
