Biography: Winner of 55 Russian caps, Smertin came to Pompey in 2003 on loan from Chelsea. The London club had only just paid Bordeaux £3.45 million but felt that he would benefit from some first team experience elsewhere. After some impressive performances at Fratton Park, most notably in Pompey's 1-0 victory over Manchester United, Smertin returned to London New boss Jose Mourinho gave him a run in the team for the first third of the season but then reduced him to a bit part player and in January 2006 he was sold to Dynamo Moscow for £1 million. After his release from Fulham and failing to find a new club he went into politics in his native Russia and in March 2009 was elected as an MP for the Altai region of Russia.
