Biography: A barnstorming centre-forward, Smith was signed by manager Billy Birrell after being spotted in a junior match in Redcar, as a 15 year-old. He progressed on schoolboy forms through the juniors, intermediates, reserves and then into the first team, scoring goals all the way. He made his league debut as a 17 year-old against Bolton Wanderers in September 1950 and despite scoring 16 goals in 39 games the next season he lost his place to Roy Bentley and dropped back into the reserves almost until his sale midway through the 1955 Championship winning season. He was sold to Tottenham Hotspur who were seeking a replacement for Eddie Baily for bargain £18,000. Went onto win the double with Spurs. Became a painter & decorator and now lives in retirement in North London after suffering from ill health.
