Biography: The 'Bald Eagle' came so close to success in his years as boss. An FA Cup semi final in 1992 against Liverpool was only lost on penalties, promotion to the First Division was missed on goal difference and the following year the same target was tantalisingly close before a play-off defeat ended the dream. He returned in 2002 as Harry Redknapp's assistant and he finally enjoyed promotion in their first year. Smith returned to the game in 2006 after a short gap, to re-join Oxford United as manager and Director. He relinquished his managerial duties in November 2007. Jim passed away in an Oxfordshire hospital on 11th December 2019 at the age of 79.
