Biography: In 2006 Southgate was appointed manager of Middlesbrough, he was always registered as a player for a short while before taking up the role on a non-playing basis shortly afterwards. He was sacked in 2009. Out of football activities have also included writing a book called Woody & Nord: A football friendship which was published in 2004 and won the Sporting Book of the Year award for 2004. In 2006 he contributed to the collection Roary & friends which saw him become a published poet. He has also become a television football pundit, co-commentating for ITV's coverage of the 2006 Fifa World Cup. After his departure from Middlesbrough he has also continued work as a pundit for ITV Sports, BBC TV & Radio, Sky Sports and Setanta Sports.
