Spence, Alan In our local newspapers in Ipswich - to fill the sports pages in the summer when there is no football to report - a former reporter on the East Anglian Daily Times and Evening Star ran an article on Bill McGarry, Town's former manager. In 1966 Southport recorded a famous away win in the FA Cup against Ipswich 2-3.

Alan Spence scored two of the goals and was involved in the winner. It was a shock result against a team that the next season were champions of Division 2. A great night for Southport. Bill McGarry later managed Wolves and Newcastle.
Ipswich spent many years in Division One including 9 seasons in European competition, winning the FA Cup in 1978 and the UEFA Cup in 1981.

Southport were relegated from the Football League soon after their win at Portman Road; is it too much to hope that on day they will regain their former status?
