Biography: Pompey broke their transfer record by paying £15,000 to add Jimmy Stephen to their ranks. He was in the R.A.F. at the time but Bradford Park Avenue held his registration and demanded a fee for his release. As a full-back, he had earned international honours with Scotland and was part of the team that won the 1949-50 League title. Ike Clarke later persuaded Stephen to join him at Yeovil Town and he stayed in the west country to become player-coach at Bridgewater Town. When he moved back to Portsmouth the Scotsman worked for GEC as a wireman for five years and then for local timber companies until taking retirement.
