Tommy Taylor

Tommy Taylor

Clubs played for: Barnsley, Manchester United, Smithies United (1949-1958)

Born: 1932

Birthplace: Smithies, West Riding of Yorkshire

Position: Centre-forward

Biography: One of the finest centre forwards to have set foot on the hallowed turf, Matt Busby justifiably paid £29,999 (he reportedly gave a pound to the tea lady to avoid Tommy having to carry the burden of a £30,000 price tag). In the process, the existing transfer record was broken to acquire the Yorkshireman's sensational scoring skills to replace the legendary Jack Rowley. He started his United career with 7 goals in 8 games, he won League Championship medals in 1956 and 1957, and he also scored in the 1957 FA Cup final defeat against Aston Villa. United turned down a world record bid of £65,000 from Inter Milan for him the year before his death. At international level he scored 16 goals in only 18 England appearances. He was sadly only 26 when he lost his life on the runway at Munich. He is buried at Monk Bretton Cemetery in his home town, Barnsley.
