Walker, Nigel During my spell playing Fly Half for Northern Rugby Club in the early 1980's I had the privilege of playing with a number of players who went on to play International Rugby ; Scott Hastings, John Jeffrey, Jim Pollock ( all Scotland ), Jonathan Webb ( England ), and Joe Clarkson ( American Eagles ), and if I get asked who I think was the best rugby player I ever played with, I answer - that is easy, a guy called Nigel Walker - he was brilliant. We played together at Dame Allan's School in the late 1970's. He was the most gifted ball player I ever played with. He once took a conversion from the left hand touchline, with his left foot i.e. the wrong foot for that touchline, ( he preferred his right foot ) and knocked it straight between the posts. Amazing. I gather 'Charlie', ( that is what we all knew him as ) is not well at the moment so I wish him all the best for the future. From playing rugby alongside him in 1977,in front of a few parents and dogs, and a year later, we all went to stand in the Leazes end of St.James' Park to watch him play against Bristol City ( I think ) along with 30,000 + others against Norman Hunter and one of the Mabbutts. We also were the 2nd. Doubles pair in the Tennis Team in 1977....but were both better a rugby !
