Biography: London born Went was hailed as a star in the making and had played for both the England Schoolboys and Youth side before the age of 17. When John Deacon took over as Chairman at Fratton Park, Went was seen as a rock upon which to build a side that could challenge for honours and the club. A fee of £155,000 was agreed with Charlton Athletic, a massive sum for a small club in those days and Went signed in December 1973. The money seemed to be well spent as he performed heroically and was named fans' Player of the Year in 1974. The side failed to live up to the Chairman's high expectations and bit by bit was sold off to recoup some of the money invested. Went was sold to Cardiff City in October 1976 for only £30,000. After only a year in Wales, Went returned to the capital and eventually moved into coaching with his first club, Orient. He now lives near Chelmsford in Essex and has worked as a publican and a sales rep for a brewery. Player of the season in 1974.

Went, Paul Paul Went was actually transferred from Fulham to Portsmouth for £155,000 not Charlton Athletic. Fulham signed Paul Went from Charlton for £80,000 in the same close season that Alan Mullery returned from Tottenham Hotspur
