Biography: Williamson was at the centre of a bizarre tale that illustrated the financial turmoil that he club were in. Paul Hart desperately needed re- enforcements and persuaded Watford to sell their 'star' defender, (who had previously been released by Southampton on a free transfer having been unable to break into their first team) for an initial fee in the region of £2 million. However, he was sold on to Newcastle United in January 2010, without having made one appearance, for fear that it would trigger a clause that meant that a further £1 million would have to be paid. He has since established himself in the heart of the Newcastle defence and was awarded the 'man of the match' award on his debut.
